Music in dreams do exist beyond our physical world while our eyes are shut out from the external stimuli in favor of the internal ones. The increase in stress, anxiety, fatigue, and the decline of our natural hearing ability brought about by a lifetime of drenching ourselves in the intensity of cacophonic environment and the repetitive incessant dissonant music and murmurs in our daily lives take us away from our ability to remember our music in dreams.
Music in dreams are musical encounters that occurred during sleep. Dream researchers observed that the occurrence of music in dreams are normal. Nonetheless, humans have the general capacity in dealing with complex acoustic representations like music in their dream state, in addition to the other life representations such as language, arts, philosophy, religion, science, medicine, mathematics, etc. Such life representations have been here on Earth as a given for many reasons, and then, humans tend to reverse-engineer the justifications, and that is why those justifications, just like in music, often fail to pan out.
Characteristics of Music In Dreams:
Typically, the most common observable quality of music in dream is its melodic nature. In other words, the melody is the bases of it and it is usually easily remembered in a wake state. To test this hypothesis, take any melodic piece of any musical genre and listen to it. Later on, what you will remember about the piece of music will be mostly the melody and not the rhythm and/or the harmony.
It is important that the dreamer would be able to remember the melodic line, whether segmental or the whole melodic piece while in a dream state, and later, the dreamer, if astute enough, be able to recreate or to reconstruct the whole musical piece. Having the dreamt melody remembered, everything is possible to recreate or to reconstruct the rhythm and harmony based on the melody heard in the music in dreams and may not be the other way around. With the given musical piece in dream, the dreamer may also be able to tailor the melody with words or lyrics and anything in between or may make something out of it. Of note that music in dreams sometimes may have words in them but unfortunately upon waking up when our eyes are open, what you may have tried to remember in dreams vanished in thin air. That is why an undistracted dreamer might be able to remember the music in dreams when in awake state because of its distinctive melodic quality of the music.
When do Music In Dreams Occur:
Usually a music in dream happens while you are asleep and in a dream state. It may happened unexpectedly and it may usually out of your control. When you try to expect of it, it seems it may not happen. It may be unpredictable when you less expecting it, and when it happens, you better be ready and try to remember it. When dreaming of music in dream, the musical experience may seemed sound so familiar, and you may felt somehow captured in the whole dreaming event, and the sounds of the music may seemed all over you, and the arrangements and the auditory phenomenon of the music may seemed unusual and usually not of this typical physical world. Unfortunately, in many cases, the dreaming event and the musical encounter may usually disappear suddenly or sometimes gradually dissipates that you may or may not be able to remember the whole or part of it upon waking up. Further observations indicated that the music may be part of the dream theme or setting or storyline in the dream while dreaming in which the music or song is being sang or instrumentally played, and/or served as an accompaniment or as a background music of the dream event itself similar to a music soundtrack or a music score in films or movies.
How to remember Music In Dreams:
There are no direct or undisputed answers at this time. In general, you have to be mentally and physically sound whether in your waking or sleeping state to hear, to remember, and to transcribe in any form the music in your dreams. Also, a healthy lifestyle, eating nutrient-riched whole plant-based food and properly well hydrated make a big difference in maintaining your overall well being.
Of note, when you hear the music in dreams, you may tend to be wrapped around into the dreaming experience itself. As a result, if you tried remembering your dreams while in a dream state (as if you tried writing it down or learning it, or memorizing it and feeling it with all your senses while dreaming) and then, suddenly upon waking up, you realized that your efforts failed because there were no written down or recorded physical manifestation of the materials you tried to document the experiences which you believe you did is the beginning of a challenge. Just remember that all this experiences happened in dream state or while asleep. It is a challenge and you should not be discouraged if you fail. Try again until you get the hang of it.
Some suggestions have been considered in remembering your dreams. Try to keep your room really quiet that would not distract you at any moment while asleep, i.e. turn off your alarm clock, radio, TV, smartphone, etc.–don’t get bitten by mosquitoes while asleep dreaming. Also keep a notepad and a pen, a handheld recorder, and bed-light by your bed always so when the sparks come, you are prepared to note down the dream encounters and not fumbling around in your room and forgetting what you just dreamt–most sparks flicker and die off suddenly. A music workstation or music keyboard or a musical instrument or any objects that will help you remind the musical encounter is useful. By doing so, you might have a good chance of remembering and sharing the music in your dreams. Good Luck!
